(pronounced ray-key) is a hands-on Japanese energy healing art form that taps into the energy that is in all living things. Reiki means Universal Life Force and is given to a client through a practitioner.
The origins of this can be traced back to Dr. Mikao Usui, a Buddhist monk who lived in Japan in the 1800’s. He developed this energy healing system that didn't deplete the practitioners themselves. Reiki was passed on to Dr. Chujiro Hayashi , who then passed it on to Mrs. Hawayo Takata. It was Mrs. Takata who brought Reiki to the United States.
Reiki helps the client relax, restore depleted energy as well as to relieve headaches, stress, fatigue, anxiety or depression. It is administered by transmitting energy from the hands of the practitioner to the client.
In an in-person session, the client lays on a massage table fully clothed. The practitioner places her hands, either directly on or just above the client’s body, in different positions from the top of the client’s head to the bottom of the feet. Reiki sessions can be done in person or long distance.
In addition to individual sessions, three levels of Reiki classes are offered to those who want to learn Reiki:
First Degree. Introduction to Reiki. Learn how to treat yourself and others. Also learn how to channel Reiki and energetically protect yourself.
Second Degree. Learn how to send Reiki long distance, how to help others in changing habits and thought patterns. Learn the power of the Reiki Symbols. Completion of First Degree is a pre-requisite.
Master Level. Learn how to become a teacher of Reiki and pass Reiki on to others. Class will include material on how to run a Reiki workshop. Reiki Master level training is a year-long apprenticeship. The class meets once a month. In addition, students will be expected to regularly practice giving Reiki to others every month.
